on blogging.

the other day i mentioned to a friend that i wanted to start blogging more.

“how often do you blog?” she asked me. and then i laughed and confessed that my last blog post was in september. that’s nearly a year ago. a year!

i’ve frequently thought about blog posts, but in the chaos of everyday life i forget how simple it is to take a morsel of an idea or a glimmer of inspiration and jot it down. i look back through posts for inspiration and to find recipes. once i’m out of the habit of writing, though, it seems so laborious to keep it up. “write blog post” sits on the to-do list day after day.

then earlier today I found this quote from the inimitable bruce lee: if you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.”

(sit on that for a second)

that’s exactly what i was doing. i was transported back to my sophomore year of college, when my mom and i watched this woman on the today show and i promptly ordered this book.

so here i am blogging.

to get back into the swing of things, here are 4 things, in no particular order:

1/
this song on repeat. perfect for an evening walk to zone out and rinse off the day.

2/
i am currently sidelined from the bike, but i still swoon every time machines for freedom sends me an email newsletter.

3/
the photo above was taken at the start of my early morning run on a ranch in ukiah, ca. i’m 10-weeks away from the new york city marathon, and running is my savior right now. expect more posts on running.

4/
after listening to paulo coelho talk with krista tippett on her podcast, “on being,” i recently re-read the alchemist. it’s just as good now as it was when i originally read it ages ago. here’s to all of us following our personal legends.

on writing.

6 notes about my bike ride yesterday.

IMG_91071/
a dude crushed me going up hawk hill. his ponytail was more luscious than mine and he was smoking a cigarette when i got to the top. hipster or european?

2/
a 5B car passed me and i desperately wanted to chase it down. i don’t think this feeling ever goes away.

3/
in case you were wondering, the headlands tunnel was closed this weekend (translation: unexpected very steep climbs).

4/
someone from twin falls stopped me at the coffee shop thanks to my elephant’s perch kit. see! money well spent!

5/
SELFIE STICKS NEED TO BE PROHIBITED ON THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. as if pedaling in the wind on a very narrow path isn’t hard enough.

6/
riding to sausalito for an espresso makes up for the terrifying trip(s) across the bridge.

a photo a day.

i don’t typically make new years resolutions, but this year i did set a goal to take one photo with my nice, non-iphone camera each day. just one. just to get back in the habit of taking a photo intentionally. sometimes it’s 10pm before i remember to take the photo and it’s a snapshot of me winding down before bed. sometimes it’s a place i’d like to remember. sometimes it’s a portrait of the wonderful folks i spend time with everyday, (or just occasionally).

here are a few windows into 2015 so far:

on a breeze through anthro today, i spotted these cute little fragrances. loving the colors and painterly flowers. a pop of spring for those of you on the east coast in the snow today.

sour cream blueberry muffins.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

i’m a sucker for a hearty blueberry muffin. i used to work at a cafe in new zealand and we made fresh muffins from scratch every morning. our chef used yogurt in her variations to keep them nice and moist. it was hard to stay away from them fresh out of the oven with a nice flat white.

i modified a few recipes from the joy of cooking for this batch. if you like to experiment, the joy of cooking is a great resource. next time, i think i’ll add some kind of sugary crumb topping…

2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter (melted)
1 cup sour cream
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups blueberries

preheat oven to 400°. grease muffin tray or use paper liners. mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. set aside. in a separate bowl beat eggs, then stir in butter, sour cream, sugar and vanilla. add wet and dry ingredients, careful not to over mix. fold in blueberries.

spoon into muffin tray, filling all the way to the top for jumbo muffins. bake for 15-20 minutes. cool for 2-3 minutes in tray, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
